New Newtons

Did a quick 2 miler today with the new Newtons. They definitely make you run a bit harder, I'm sure I'll be sore tomorrow. I'm hoping my supination won't cause too much wear on the outside of the heel.

Right knee and thigh HURT today. Stretching is helping; I'm sure it's the IT band from hell springing back up.

I need to get a 6-miler in on Wednesday to try and stay on track. Tomorrow's Christmas so...no.

On the upside, running-happy is helping my no-husband mopeyness. Definitely think I'll just go back to STL on Thursday to see him.

First night run!

Tonight I joined some other runners in Cape Girardeau for a 5 mile night run to see Christmas lights. It was a lot of fun! You get tired running by yourself all the time. It was freezing! Fortunately I wore my warm tights, a long sleeve t and my new (shiny!) Brooks running jacket, which worked beautifully.

I, however, didn't work too beautifully. Even though the prednisone the Dr prescribed me last week gave me tons of energy, it also left me terribly dehydrated. A mile in and both my legs cramped and I was forced to walk a lot more than I would have wanted to. Fortunately the run was a "no man left behind" scenario and a couple of the ladies were nice enough to hang back with me. After another mile or so the cramps worked themselves out and we finished out the run. It was nice to meet some new people besides the...well, besides most of the people I've met here in Cape.

And now I HAVE to go back for another run, just to prove I'm not a complete loser!

Dear body: no.

Just when I thought I was back on track for my Princess half training, my pre-Thanksgiving sinusitis is back with vengeance. So now I'm home sick from work, taking antibiotics that make me dizzy and a small dose of prednisone to help me breathe. And not running. (Insert Charlie Brown-style ARGH! here)

Tomorrow night the local running store is having an end of the world sale that I'm definitely visiting, but also a 5-miler through the area to look at Christmas lights. I really want to go but there's no way I'll be feeling good enough to do a 5-miler. I need to try and work out a 2 or 3 mile run first just to make sure I can still breathe (and not topple over from the cipro-induced dizziness).

It's so frustrating!! I can never seem to string together a solid two months of running without either being sick or having some weird injury. My "goal in life" for today is to do a yoga class in front of the tv. We'll see how that works.

I'll just have to work harder to train for the Princess and hope that I don't get sick again between now and February. Maybe the antibiotics kill everything off finally.

For those of you about to run...I salute you.

Reboot

This is about my 100th attempt at launching a blog. I'm hoping to write more this time as I've decided to make this one a general life blog.

In just over 9 weeks I'm running my very first half-marathon!! February 24th is the Disney Princess Half at Disney World. I'm super-excited as I wanted to run it last year and never really dedicated myself to training for it. After the worst heat over the summer was over I started a 10-week training program, ending in a 12K (7.45 mile) race in Adamstown, just down the road. The training pace was fierce but I did pretty well at the race, which was a very hilly course, finishing in an hour and a half.

Unfortunately I took a little more time off after the race than I should have, and got hit with a sinus infection right before Thanksgiving. I just started back on the training plan last week, which should be alright if I can remain injury-free and committed to the schedule.

Yesterday I went for a 5 mile run around Cape Girardeau, where my husband is based with his airline (hopefully temporarily). I'm spoiled by Lancaster, with its wide streets and fairly gentle hills. Yesterday's run was all on sidewalk (hard on my knees) and had hills reminiscent of a roller coaster; steep inclines and steep drops. My right leg, which is always an issue, hurts quite a bit today. I'll have to do a lot of stretching and work on my IT band. I've had this issue before and luckily it doesn't bother me when I run, just when I'm walking around the house.

The main issue I've had with training has been scheduling runs around work. Unfortunately my work schedule is inconstant; one trip I'll be flying nights, another mornings. It's nearly impossible to run after getting up at 4am and flying all day, and if I do manage to get out, I can tell a marked difference in my endurance and pace. BUT at least I get out.

Sometimes I feel like all I do is fly, run, sleep, repeat, but honestly? That's ok.
